Foresters and Orchids on Pewsey Down

Took a Sunday drive into Wiltshire for a lovely day on Pewsey Down. It is an outstanding piece of chalk downland and abounds with butterflies, orchids and day-flying moths. There are thousands of Lesser Butterfly Orchids now in flower along with the ubiquitous Common Spotted and Chalk Fragrant Orchids. I looked long and hard for Frog Orchids which are present but failed to find any of these well camouflaged plants. Butterflies were represented by several Marsh Fritillaries, Wall Browns, Small Blues, Adonis Blues and Grizzled and Dingy Skippers. Day flying moths were abundant with Five-spotted Burnets in their thousands. Amongst them were the scarce and local Cistus Forester and the rarer Scarce Forester. A lovely place - highly recommended.
